Explore Data Donation and Web Archiving tools @ ResBaz 2025
The Australian Internet Observatory (AIO) is pleased to be participating in ResBaz Queensland 2025, held this year at the Moreton Bay campus of the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC). We are hosting multiple sessions relevant to HASS and Indigenous researchers studying digital platforms.
Session on Data Donation:
Session Title: Studying digital platforms with data donation tools from the Australian Internet Observatory
Date & Time: Wednesday, 2 July 2025, 9:15 – 10:30am
Room: MBA1-G.32, University of the Sunshine Coast – Moreton Bay Campus
An overview of data donation methodology will be included through one of the AIO session, "Studying digital platforms with data donation tools from the Australian Internet Observatory". This workshop introduces researchers to a set of data donation tools developed by AIO to support empirical studies of digital platforms and online media environments. These tools allow participants to contribute their own platform data—such as advertising content or recommendation histories—in structured, privacy-respecting formats. We will cover both the technical and ethical foundations of data donation, and present examples of how donated data is being used in current research projects. How HASS and Indigenous researchers can use the data donated for their projects will also be discussed.
The aim of this session is to make data donation methods more accessible to researchers from across disciplines, particularly those exploring digital political communication, platform governance, media pluralism, and algorithmic accountability. The session will include a live demonstration, discussion of research design considerations, time for questions, and provide feedback. Whether you are a digital methods novice or experienced computational researcher, we welcome you to join us in exploring new ways to work with platform data in a participant-centred, transparent framework.
Session on Web Archiving:
Session Title: Web Archives 101: Beyond Copy and Paste for Digital Research
Date & Time: Thursday, 3 July 2025, 9:15 – 10:30am
Room: MBA1-G.33, University of the Sunshine Coast – Moreton Bay Campus
This workshop covers the basics of web archiving as an alternative to simple copying and pasting from the internet. It positions web archiving as a more sophisticated approach to digital research, while maintaining an accessible, beginner-friendly tone that invites participation from those new to the concept. AIO Senior Data Scientist, Robert Fleet, working at the QUT Digital Observatory will be providing researchers with assistance on using web archiving in their projects.
AIO Stall at ResBaz 2025:
AIO will be also be hosting a stall at ResBaz 2025, showcasing our research methods, tools, and projects. Stop by to chat with our Research Training Manager, Dr Bogdan Mamaev, and learn how you can leverage AIO infrastructure (both data donation and web archiving) in your own research.
