Job Opportunity: Senior Developer/Data Scientist – Digital Observatory

The Australian Internet Observatory, hosted at QUT’s Digital Observatory, is recruiting for a Senior Developer/Data Scientist for the optimum operations of the Observatory, professional delivery of research services, elevated uptake of research infrastructure capabilities, and establishing systems and processes towards efficient and effective delivery of these capabilities.

  • Position Type: Fixed-term, full-time (2 years)

  • Salary Range: $135,483 to $153,562 per annum
    (inclusive of $114,485–$129,761 base + 17% superannuation + 17.5% leave loading)

  • Location: Gardens Point Campus (hybrid working available)

  • Eligibility: Open to applicants with unrestricted Australian work rights for the full duration of the appointment

The role is based within the Office of the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Research) and contributes to the technical development and delivery of the Digital Observatory’s infrastructure and services. The successful candidate will work across a range of projects, supporting researchers with tools and platforms for collecting and analysing large-scale digital data, including social media and other online data sources.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Service and Project Planning:
    Work with the Manager to shape the Digital Observatory’s development roadmap by identifying new project opportunities and capturing user needs through engagement with researchers.

  • Research Software Development:

    • Lead a team to maintain secure and stable data infrastructure.

    • Design and develop research tools (primarily in Python) to collect, archive, and transform web-based data.

    • Integrate tools with QUT systems and develop workflows to manage research data across its lifecycle.

    • Maintain open-source tools and support continuous team improvement.

    • Create training materials and deliver workshops to support researcher use of tools.

  • Collaboration and Research Support:

    • Act as a technical liaison with researchers across disciplines.

    • Provide hands-on support, resolve technical issues, and feed learnings back into service improvement.

  • Workplace Health and Safety:
    Follow QUT’s health and safety policies and ensure safe working practices.

The Digital Observatory team includes software developers and data scientists working across linguistics, information systems, psychology, and computational social science. The position supports both technical operations and research engagement aligned with FAIR data principles.
